Speed traps are deliberately placed where people are most likely to get caught speeding; long stretches of often clear road, amongst other locations. Sometimes we're caught speeding when it was for a good reason like an emergency. Whatever the reasons, we deserve fair warning when such a trap is coming up so we can adjust our speed accordingly to avoid the heavy fines. And while the fines are indeed harsh in this economy and sometimes there just to fund the government, the black mark on your license for the long period of time is also a real damper. To solve these problems, there are devices called car radar detectors. They detect police scanners and spot speed traps ahead of time, so you can slow down for them. While illegal in some countries, they're also legal in many others, so double check what the law is where you live, as breaking the law by having illegal equipment is a whole lot more serious than a speeding fine.

Detectors

It should be noted that these simple detect them, they don't block them. As such, slow down during speed traps to fully avoid the consequences. There are several different makes of radar detector, but many have similar properties. For a comprehensive system, here are some of the features you should look for.

Range: The very best of the detectors work up to ten miles. This is great for giving you time to slow down without sudden stops or being caught out. Furthermore, ones that can detect hidden speed traps or 'over-the-hill' speed traps are especially noteworthy.

Sensitivity: Low-quality detectors suffer from many false-positives, where they detect a police scanner when there isn't one. This will be more detrimental than helpful in the long run. In the higher-quality detectors, they not only reduce these false noise alerts, but also have increased sensitivity, some due their unique antenna systems.

Warning System: While a flashing light or linking LED screen might catch your eye, nothing is quite as likely to catch your attention as a voice alert. These can alert you to radars, and those with laser detectors inbuilt can also warn you of them too. This may be the second most important aspect, after being able to detect all the newest police radars.

The installation should be easy and provide all the necessary equipment such as suction cups or clamps. Furthermore, having the latest software for the newest police equipment would be something of outstanding use.
