| Not only do composite fillings make for a more natural-looking smile, they are strong and durable, too. |
Many people are opting to have their silver-colored, or amalgam, fillings replaced with composite resin dental fillings. Composite resin fillings, made of plastic dental resin, are fillings colored to look like a natural tooth. Not only do composite fillings make for a more natural-looking smile, they are strong and durable, too. Composite resins may also be used to improve the appearance of a tooth, which is known as a tooth bonding.
How does a dentist apply a composite resin filling? First, a local anesthetic will be administered to numb the area. Then an opening to the affected area of the tooth is prepared and the decayed portions are removed. A strong bond must be created before the composite can hold fast to the tooth. This is created by opening up the pores of the tooth's dentin thus roughening up the surface of the exposed enamel. A bond resin, a more fluid substance made from the same resin as the composite, is put on to the tooth so that the composite resin will adhere properly. This layer is hardened and cured with a bright dental light. The composite fillings are then applied in thin layers and hardened by a bright dental light in between applications to be slowly built up to form the complete filling. When the filling is completed the dentist will use a special paper to fine-tune the height of the filling and ensure that your bite remains correct. Then the tooth is ready to be polished.
Composite fillings are more time consuming to apply than amalgam fillings and cost slightly more, but the results are beautiful which make for a happy patient with a natural-looking smile.
