| Often referred to as simply the CRC, the Carbon Reduction Commitment scheme applies to large energy intensive organisations/businesses.. |
The scheme launched in April 2010 and has been met with approval from all over the world. To put it simply; the Carbon Reduction Commitment scheme is a mandatory trading scheme for large energy intensive UK organisations (non-transport). Any money collected by the government from the scheme will be 'recycled' to those who take part, depending on the emission reductions achieved - if you are a good performer then you will receive a bonus, and if you're over the limit then you will receive a penalty.
Recognition
Not only does the scheme have financial implications with bonuses and penalties, it also has a reputation factor as the results of each CRC year will be published in an annual league table for everyone to see. As the business and consumer world moves towards wanting to work with 'green' and 'carbon conscious' companies, the higher you can appear in this table the more likely you are to receive new business from a customer who's interested in working with a company that cares about the environment.
If you perform well in the table then there is a serious opportunity to capitalise on it, with your brand and marketing departments needing to be on their toes. The media will have full access to the tables once they have been published, meaning you can proudly shout about your result if you've done well, or try to recover if the opposite.
However, over time the companies that have managed to dramatically decrease their carbon emissions (and receive bonuses in the early stages for good performance) will find it increasingly difficult to finish high in the tables as they begin to reach a point where they simply can't reduce the emissions any more - this is seen as a negative, although on the flipside these types of companies will benefit financially from reduced energy bills. |
