Everyone has been affected by technology and the internet whether they like to admit it or not.
From the children who use computers as part of their learning at school and then go home to surf the web and talk to friends on social networking sites to the grandparents who use Skype to talk to family members around the world – all of our lives have been touched by technology.
Some people believe this is not a good thing. They believe that computers are destroying our ability to communicate face to face with other people and that it makes people’s working lives more difficult (where they still have jobs.)
They would add that computers are taking away our ability to feel empathy (due to computer game and not enough time communicating), making us fat and putting the lives of our children at risk.
Others believe that the internet is the best thing to ever to have been invented. They would retort that the internet has made everyone equal, that information can be freely shared and given, that it gives people a voice, and that it can topple governments in countries where free speech is not allowed...
Who is right?
The truth is that they are all a bit right.
It is true that technology has made work better and worse. Better for allowing greater flexibility (working from home) and worse in that it is harder than ever to switch off.
Technology has simply added another communication stream with Skype and Facebook but it is our choice to stop calling each other or meeting face to face. So many of the criticisms of technology are simply that, poor choices on our part, to not exercise, to not watch over our children, to not make an effort...
Perhaps we would have made these choices anyway and technology is simply the fall guy.
