However, one of the cities that has seen a particularly steep increase in such activity over recent weeks is Beijing.At the start of this year, the Chinese capital saw car hire go up by around 300 per cent compared with the same period in 2010. Two main factors were cited for the trend. The first of these was new rules that have been introduced by the government in a bid to reduce carbon emissions and congestion.Under the terms of radical polices devised by officials, residents in the area have to draw lots to determined who can use their cars in the city and when. In addition, a lottery has been introduced and only those who are chosen are permitted to buy a new vehicle.Commenting on this, industry specialist Xiang Ping said: "Now, only 20,000 vehicles get new license plates every month. And this number covers the ones belonging to both enterprises and individuals. It's a good thing for the rental car industry," Xinhua reports.He added: "The new traffic regulations have changed people's opinions about renting cars. Hopefully, the hired car will help contribute to solving Beijing's clogged roadways."The expert also noted that some people are keen to avoid the "hassle" of getting a train ticket and they find it more convenient to rent a vehicle and share the expense with colleagues or friends.Meanwhile, the second factor that led to a rise in demand for hire cars was the Spring Festival that took place last month as part of the celebrations for the Chinese New Year.
During this time, people from all over China and tourists travelling from overseas descended on the city. This meant there was an increased demand for transport. Of course, one of the things many people prioritise when renting a vehicle is cheap car hire. After all, when they succeed in getting cheap car hire, they have more cash to spend on other things. |
