It’s a cold breezy morning and you are sitting under your porch sipping a hot cup of tea and enjoying some freshly baked scones. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a few birds roam around chirping about to their hearts content and make you feel you are amidst Mother Nature’s best creations? This hobby that most people enjoy can be quite addictive and give you hours of pleasure and contentment.
Attracting birds to your garden can be a very easy task given that you have the time and patience to be creative with nature. Considering the space that you have, be it a small cramped up back yard or an enormous back garden, you have to make it more inviting to the birds to flock into.
First and foremost, you can plant native trees where birds can perch and use as shade, also plant trees with food sources such as various types of berries, as well as bushy type native plants where birds can nest. You can also have a little lawn depending on the space that you have and allow creepers to run wild over your back fences and walls’ permitting that it doesn’t harm your day to day activities.
Bird food is an important factor to consider when attracting birds to your garden. Most birds like finches (goldfinch, greenfinch etc) and regular backyard birds prefer eating various types of nuts such as peanuts, seeds such as black sunflower seed, Niger seed, fats and also a wide variety of fruit dried or fresh. Other interesting bird feed includes dried mealworms, grit and minerals, fat balls, leftovers etc. You can try by keeping all your feeding stations such as bird feeders, bird tables, or tray feeders off the ground to keep away from predators but also keep in mind to scatter some feed on the ground to bring in ground feeding birds. Always keep in mind to keep your feeding station clean and try to experiment using different types of feed to attract a variety of birds.
Birds also require a constant flow of water and they need to quench their thirst at regular intervals. Hence you can be creative and design a bird bath with varied depths for various species of birds. The best idea is to keep water pure and flowing at all times. Shelter is also an important aspect in welcoming birds. You can place nest boxes with different sizes of holes to attract different birds and place them where there is less activity in the garden. Quiet corners that are covered with creepers are perfect. Clean these boxes at least yearly to bring in new families and make sure that the boxes are always dry and properly ventilated.
