| Performance Venues / Areas that you will find at The Edinburgh Festival Fringe, part of the Edinburgh Festival. Venues include The Underbelly and The Pleasance. |
The Pleasance, Edinburgh.
The Pleasance is the name of a street in Edinburgh's Old Town it is also the name for University of Edinburgh's student facilities on the road. The Edinburgh University's Student Association (EUSA) and the Edinburgh University Sport Union (EUSU) are the two permanent resident organisations that occupy the Pleasance.
The Pleasance first opened its doors to Fringe goers in 1985. Originally, the Pleasance has two performing areas both at the Courtyard.
Today, the Pleasance Theatre in Edinburgh actually comprises eighteen different "performance spaces" at two different locations the Pleasance Courtyard—on Pleasance—and the Pleasance Dome, which can be found in Bristo Square. The combined eighteen "performance areas" make the Pleasance the single largest venue at the Edinburgh International Fringe – if you see what I mean. Both the Pleasance Courtyard and the Pleasance Dome can be found in the Scottish capital's Old Town.
This summer over 200 shows in a variety of stand up comedians, thespians, musicians and dancers will perform to an audience anticipated to exceed 500,000 people.
The Pleasance has two main bars during University term time: the Cabaret Bar and the Pleasance Bar. The Pleasance website reports that it operated ten outside bars and cafes in 2006.
McEwan Hall
McEwan Hall on Bristo Square is part of the University of Edinburgh. The building is adjacent to the University's famous Medical School. The Hall is one of the biggest venues used at the Edinburgh Fringe with capacity for 2,000 people. The Hall is named after William McEwan, of brewing fame, who funded the building's construction. Sir Robert Rowand Anderson designed the Hall in the Italian Renaissance style. It opened just before the turn of the twentieth century.
When not in use as a Festival venue, McEwan Hall plays host to conferences, graduation ceremonies, concerts and lectures.
The Grand
This 700 seat venue is situated in the Pleasance Courtyard. It is the largest venue at the Pleasance Courtyard and it first opened in 2004. The smallest venue this year will be the Teepee with room for twenty spectators.
Sister Act
The Pleasance Edinburgh has a sibling, the Pleasance Islington (which was at one time known as the Pleasance London).
