A good team building event, be it a fun event or a more serious interactive event, will try to sew the team together.

Dealing with the complex mechanics of human expression has always been an intriguing puzzle. How humans learn, how they handle conflicts, how they behave in groups, and how their personality defines their role in a group are all important elements to understand and consider when discovering the potential within a group of humans to interact successfully. Each human being has a preferred method of communicating, listening, learning, and organizing. Their method is not the same as the next human, and there lies the rub when trying to put together a successful team.

Most project managers choose team members by skill sets rather than personalities. Team cohesion is an afterthought. This is not a necessarily wrong approach as you; first and foremost, want the right skills to do a job. However, when individuals need to rely on each other to understand, process, and produce an artifact the ability to interact successfully can sometimes make or break a project. This is where team-building activities become important.

A good team building event, be it a fun event or a more serious interactive event, will try to sew the team together. Facilitators will try to understand the personalities that comprise the team and explore the methods that each individual uses to perform their daily tasks. By understanding the individuals within the team, a good facilitator will be better able to draw upon the individual strengths to lay groundwork for the of support for the entire team. Using a strong interpersonal approach to these exercises will produce the best possible outcome.
